Characteristics of commitment to Product Stewardship
An industry should be judged by its commitment to product stewardship based on :
1) Environmental package and design considerations
2) Commitment to environmental manufacturing techniques and efficient distribution methods
3) Marketing efforts to promote end of life considerations and supporting programs
4) Provide recycled content and help fund end markets
The beverage industry is proud to meet all these characteristics and to provide real leadership in the area of product stewardship.
1) Environmental package and design considerations
Sustainable Packaging- Design for Recycling ‐ All of the industry’s packages are 100% recyclable, helping make beverage containers the most recycled consumer packaging in the marketplace today.
At 10.9 grams, the Eco‐Fina™ Bottle weighs less than any other national water brand of its size. For example, Aquafina’s new Eco‐Fina bottle uses 50% less plastic than in 2002. It is the lightest bottle of its size among national bottled water brands.
Using Less Packaging ‐ Through an ongoing commitment to “lightweighting” ‐ reducing the amount of material used in our bottles, cans, labels, caps and wraps ‐ For example- PepsiCo has eliminated 396 million pounds of plastic, aluminum and cardboard packaging since 2002.
Looking ahead, Research & Development teams are testing biodegradable packaging materials and exploring technologies that enable us to use significantly higher levels of recycled material in our containers.
2) Commitment to environmental manufacturing techniques and efficient distribution methods
Gatorade and Propel waterless bottle rinsing reduced water use by 7% since 2004.
51% More Energy Efficient Vendors Today than in 2003
Equipment innovations are saving 400 million kilowatt‐hours of energy a year worldwide.
Water Conservation and Stewardship
Waterless Processes ‐Our bottling plants conserve millions of gallons of water each year with innovative processes like waterless rinsing and waterless conveyor lubrication. A new sanitation process being implemented by our Pepsi bottlers will reduce water consumption by another 75 million gallons a year.
Recover and Reuse ‐ Our manufacturing teams are also innovating ways to recover and recycle water that would otherwise go into the waste stream. For example, Pepsi’s largest bottler installed water recovery systems on its reverse osmosis filters that conserve close to 300 million gallons of water a year.
Community Outreach ‐ We play a vital role in supplying emergency water supplies to communities when safe drinking water is not available. Truckloads of bottled water have been delivered to communities following natural disasters such as tornadoes, fires, and floods.
Energy Conservation and Climate Change
Energy Efficient Refrigeration ‐ Through a series of design changes and refinements, today’s vending machines use 51% less energy than 2003 models and today’s coolers use 44% less energy than 2004 models. Worldwide, these improvements have reduced energy consumption by about 400 million kilowatt hours per year and save our customers about $40 million in annual energy bills.
Fuel Efficient Fleet ‐ Bottlers are adding hybrid trucks to their delivery fleets and transitioning their sales and service fleets to hybrid and high fuel efficiency cars and lightweight trucks. By joining EPA’s SmartWay program, they are learning to further reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and to save money.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions ‐Another example of leadership- Pepsi led the industry in mandating removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) producing insulating foams from our refrigerated equipment and introduced the first climate‐friendly vendors in the U.S. By improving the energy efficiency of our vendors and coolers, we’ve reduced GHG emissions by 282,000 metric tons per year. And, by using less plastic in their Aquafina water bottles, they’re cutting GHG emissions by another 104,000 metric tons per year. These two changes alone are equivalent to taking 71,000 cars off the road for a year.
3) Marketing efforts to promote end of life considerations and supporting programs
The industry encourages and enables recycling by designing packages that are fully recyclable and through consumer education, activation programs, and community‐focused partnerships.
We help our customers and consumers collect millions of containers for recycling each year through recycling promotions, in communities, schools, and at sporting and entertainment events and on college campuses.
4) Provide recycled content and help fund end markets
Pepsi’s soft drink bottles are made with 10% recycled plastic – more than any other national brand.
Over 150Million Gallons of Water Saved.
Using Recycled Material ‐ With 40‐50% recycled aluminum in our cans.
The aluminum, plastic and glass in our cans and bottles is 100% recyclable and has a valuable “after‐life.” Recycled containers are used to make new bottles and cans and other products like carpeting, clothing and even furntiure. And, recycling reduces waste going to landfills and cuts greenhouse gas emissions that impact climate change.
